Indiana State Sanatorium
History:
Located on over 200 acres in west-central Indiana, the Indiana State Sanatorium has over 120,000 square feet of historic tuberculosis hospital, nursing home, mental hospital and supporting buildings as well as thousands of feet of steam tunnels. The Indiana State Sanatorium operated as Indiana’s main tuberculosis hospital from 1908 to 1968. Re-opened as the Lee Alan Bryant Health Care Center in 1976, the site operated as a nursing home and private mental hospital until 2011 when it closed suddenly leaving behind hundreds of beds, linens and hospital equipment. The facility has faced multiple lawsuits due to allegations of neglect and elder abuse. Several patients were known to wander off and occasionally meet violent ends such as traffic accidents and drownings, and there are multiple suicides reported on the property.
The most well-known and documented report happened in August 2009, when 27-year-old Ryan J. Clark, a maintenance worker at the Lee Alan Bryant Care center fatally shot his coworker, Kenneth A. Godfrey, in the chest, then proceeded to walk to the boiler room on the property and shoot himself in the head.
